First, this is NOT a Saddam post. Thats the last of mentioning of his name I want to hear in this topic.

For animosity sake I wont name any names, and this is truly something close to my heart.

I want to know what or why someone can cut themselves.
I want to know what or why someone would take pills to OD.

I have a friend. Her and I have been getting pretty close the past few months. She recently told me that she cuts herself. A lot. Almost nightly. I asked her why and she told me that shes been doing it since she can remember. I asked her why she doesn't stop, cause apparently she wanted my input on the matter or else she wouldn't have told me. She told me she used to do counseling because of it and it kinda helped, but after it was done she started back up. I asked her why and for what reasons she had to do this? Her reply was simply "Just cause. I want to stop but I can't." So I talked with her about it but really I dont think it did much good.

Anyway, what or why would this make someone become addicted to cutting themselves? What satisfaction does the person gain by doing it? I just dont understand. I know people have their reasons, but hers is simply "Just cause". And before you all mention that things aren't always what they seem, I have heard some pretty messed up stories from this girl and I know shes not all perfect and angelic as she makes to be, but this is simply "Just Cause", and I dont get it!

This I actually found out about this afternoon after work, on an MSN conversation of all places too. She told me she was scared for her life because she had OD'd on something, she wouldnt tell me what. But when I called her earlier in the morning, I thought she was just sleeping, but apparently she was OD'd on something and I didn't know it. She told me she was scared for her life. Again, of course, I asked her why she would do such a thing. Her reply was the same as cutting, "Ive done it since I can remember, its just cause I want to". She cant stop herself. Again, I just dont get it. How can someone take pills "Just Cause" and for no apparent reason. She doesnt even do it for the high, she just takes them. I want so bad to understand why she does this, what would make her want to keep on doing it, want to make her be scared for her life because of something she does 'just cause' and cant seem to quit doing it. I just dont understand.

Conclusion
I eventually found out later that she had talked with her parents about the whole ordeal and she had asked to be taken back into counseling for the cutting and the OD'ing. Which thank god I was extremely happy to hear.

But I would still like to understand, at least, just simply a shred of what or why someone would do this to themselves.

Since this community is probably one of the only communities that I actually take part in, and most of you are crazy enough as it is or have had similar experiences, I ask you to help fill a guy in, on one of his growing good friends' life and what could possibly be ticking inside of her head.

This is what the public generally tags as "emo". Usually people due this due to problems in their pass or sometimes just pure boredom. Other times it's to imitate their favorite role models (usually like emo musicians and whatnot). I don't know the exact reason because I don't know the girl. Hopefully she can stop.

I'm not a wrist cutter, infact I freak out immensely when I start to bleeed. Bruises, broken bones, do what you will, but I will freak out like Tom Cruise if I start to bleed.

From what I've read, something must be happening. Something like that would rarely be a self made habit. She have any dramatic problems? Is something really putting the stress on her? I had a friend like that. She said it was a way to "forget stuff", go figure.

If you mean pain when shes cutting she told me she only hurts after shes done. Ive talked to her when shes been cutting, and I can tell she is, because normally she is a great person to talk to and shes like most women and a non-stop talker. But when shes cutting shes just the "Oh,okay." "Yea." "No." and thats about the gist of it.

As for the emo part. I would agree at first, but shes definately not. She is more the tomboy cowgirl type girl, lives on a ranch, listens to country, dresses gorgeously and has a smile to die for, gets along with almost all the "cliques", talks to everyone, outspoken, open minded, shes a fantastic person.

Okay guys, first off, there's a difference between an emo and a cutter.

Emos think their lives are horrible and their depression is usually a mental issue, Like being bipolar or chronic depression, which is then amplified by people who bully Emos for being so.... Emo. That which then causes more depression. Therefore, an endless cycle of misery. Emos that cut, cut for attention. They want to see if anyone cares. Sometimes they plan that if they cut and get institutionalized, they'll find someone or people they can relate to, like other cutters, and feel better accepted by those people rather than anyone that picks of them at school.

Cutters punish themselves out of guilt and depression, but in a different fashion than emos. If they feel they've done something horribly wrong or did something horribly wrong. They can't bring themselves to suicide, so they pain themselfs as punishment. They either do this in a hidden fashion, if they feel they can handle their own problems with cutting, or blantantly, like on their wrists, hands, arms, and other revealed parts of their body, so they can show that they have cut themselves.

ODers are mostly the same as cutters, except more riskier, usually unsure if they just want to harm themselves or kill themselves, they their chance by ODing.

And then theres the chance of masochism.

She might find sexual pleasure in harming herself. It's not that rare really, alot of people get off from pain.

Though I highly doubt she's a masochist since she ODed on pills.

Has anything horrible happened to her? You find out the source why she cuts, see what you can do about it. If you can't do anything about the matter, then you need to find a way to make her feel better about herself.

That's all I can say, I hope she gets better.

Ok, first thing you do is ask her if she has a boyfriend.
If she doesn't that is probably the cause of it. Why you ask?
Well lets see the facts:
1.She wouldn't feel lonely any more.
2.If I was her boyfriend for example I would NEVER let this happen to her.I would literaly sleep at her house to prevent this.
3.Usually when you have a boyfriend/girlfriend you are not "bored" anymore...

Now, if she does have a boyfriend,here's my 2 cents:
She has lost her mind. I'm sorry but if what you are saying is true("she does it just 'because'") then she needs some help from the crazy house.
