The US Army is to apologise to the families of officers killed or wounded in action who were sent letters urging them to return to active duty.

The letters were sent to more than 5,100 Army officers listed as recently having left the military.

But this figure included about 75 officers killed in action and about 200 wounded in action.

More than 3,000 members of the US military have died in Iraq since the war began.

Casualties have also been suffered in Afghanistan since the US invasion.

"Army personnel officials are contacting those officers' families now to personally apologise for erroneously sending the letters," the army said in a statement.

It said the database normally used for such correspondence with former officers had been "thoroughly reviewed" to remove the names of dead and wounded soldiers.

"But an earlier list was used inadvertently for the December mailings," it added.

USA at its best. It was a serious **** up. It's an horrible thing to receive such a letter. It's already bad enough they died for their country, and now the want them to lift up from their graves and probably eat the enemies brains.

Shame on you USA Army.

It's not the surprising to me, also doesn't seem like that big a **** up. I been getting mail for my dead grandmother practically forever.

Hey, the United States made a clerical error. Big deal. They didn't do this on purpose. I don't appreciate your comment "USA at its best." You really have absolutely no idea what you are talking about and really would be best not posting. The US obviously is full of morons. i agree with holy cross, and also the only reason why people would hate on america is because their jealous of what we got and they don't so they find every way possible to bring us down finding every error and flaw that we have.

i'm asian right now and i'm saying this, i don't agree with people who say asian pride and asian invasion, yes i have asian pride in myslef but i don't say it out loud or tell everybody because i know i have pride in myself and i know i will keep it but, to tell you the truth, those who say asian invasion and shit are stupid as hell thinking about invading america or the world or some shit, i mean they are living here in america with more freedom than ever, if they live back their shitty communism shitpiled country like ****ing vietnam, laos, or cambodia or some shit, they wouldn't have as much freedom here as they do in the u.s, shit man they would probably be poor as ***** i'm vietnamese and yes i do love my country and all but the united states of america changed the way i am and my family, and my family would sometimes tell me how lucky i am to be living in the u.s right now and how back in vietnam theres poor people everyday wouldn't be able to afford shit like i do and stuff

america is the greatest thing ever happened in history for nasa, our scientists, nasa helps find more about space and our universe, spreading democracy, we helped spread democracy back then by pooling tons of money to countries to prevent them from being communist, especially most european countries, helping prevent communism, world war 2, world war 1, preventing china from being invaded by japanese, helping providing resources to allied countries and going to war against axis powers, our military probably are one of the most high tech right now using the most high tech equipment in the military while china still uses most of their planes and ships that are outdated back in the 70's and 80's so china aren't necessarily be the strongest even though they have the largest, we also invented many things including the television, economic history of the united states is a story of economic growth that began with marginally successful colonial economies and progressed to the largest industrial economy in the world in the 20th and early 21st century, we developed the internet

ok **** man, too much to think of but yeah, well anyways, all i got to say is vietnamese pride in myself but i have u.s. pride also, go america!

and on topic, about the army sending mails to dead and injured soldiers, wow the army sure is messed up lol, yeah join the marine corps instead! woot! semper fi! oorah! marine corps baby!
