Default Is this game fun?

Ok, really all I want to know is if this game plays anything like an FF game. I'm a big fan of FF, so I've decided i would try this game out. I was just wondering if this game would be similar in any way at all. I know the battle system is obviously different, but it could still have all the strategy and things that I loved in FF. So, will this game give me a similar experience, or does it play like an average MMORPG?

EDIT: Sorry about making another thread. I looked around the forum to find many others asking my same question. Still, I might have a few other questions, so I'd appreciate your answers.

No, this game isn't very much fun, and no, it doesn't play much like
a traditional FF game at all.
It's basically all about grinding, and collecting gear.
You could always focus on missions, quests and that kinda stuff, but you'd
get nowhere until you got at least one job up to a decent level,
and by that time you will probably quit the game because elitist a-holes like myself will constantly harrass you for not having top-class gear.

Sorry, it's not sarcasm.
Seriously. It's all about the grinding.
Low-to-mid level players are too weak to get anthing done
without high level help, and the high levels themselves
are only concerned about their next piece of gear, so they
can get that much closer to their fantasy of having the
biggest e-wang on the server.

I won't lie, so I'll admit some of the quests are kinda interesting,
and the plot of the main story is kinda neat, but you won't be able
to do much of either until you're a fairly high level - and by that time
you won't care anymore, since you'll have heard of another new superitem that you don't really need.

I'd have to say that the "grinding" system works alot better than the quest system in WoW. The storyline is nice, the characters have style, sometimes you have to find your way to stuff without a map, which makes it even more challenging...
There's always someone to help if you wait a bit (usually less than 30mins, depending on what you need to get done and who's online, japanese people are awesome)
I bought it like 2 months ago, still pretty newbish but it has a great feel to it.
At level 30 you can get an advanced job leveled, which is even more fun.
Most people just compare it to action MMOs but it shouldn't be.
Plus, it's cheap as hell and there's a new expansion pack coming out in winter 2007. It's a very challenging game tho, gets frustrating once in a while.
As for the previous FF games, well ... it feels like one, except the fights are real-time. Everything you see or do will be inspired by a previous FF game.
Hope I was more helpful than Naitzmic ^^

Beg to differ with that, Naitzmic . I haven't heard of too many people not liking the game, personally I think its great. (Well actually I don't play anymore, but I did stay for a good 2 1/2 years.) It bugs me that is has an FF number title because it doesn't really fit, but it's still really fun.

Theres the widest variety of things to do in any MMO ive played (although I haven't played WoW so that might have more). My favorite thing is that I love how you only need 1 character cause theres tons of jobs, but you can switch them whenever you want. I'm so dying to find another game with the same option. Not only that, but you get a subjob that you can lvl/choose and it gives you effects of half your main level. In example...
(Ninja/Warrior)
NIN50/WAR25, getting all benefits from lvl 50 ninja, yet also getting a lot of benefits of a lvl 25 warrior such as skills and stat+. You can use any combo you want, but you have to lvl the jobs first to get any effects.

I guess its true its grindy, but the game is just soo much fun. I tend not to like games you have to do a lot of grinding, but FFXI has a way of making it fun for a really long time. You'll actually notice its very skill-based the more you play, (either that or use common sense) so its not just mindless fighting. Theres much more details about it & also some downsides, but I won't really get into that anymore. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. PM me if you want me to tell you more about it.

I liked the game while i still had it ((had to stop playing since i couldnt pay for it anymore)). The game is grindy but the good thing is that you have to grind with a party so your always meeting someone new and making new friends. The story's okish

I'm leveling Blue Mage, it's epic

One of my old linkshell members was in the same party as a black mage
and I out-damaged him ^^
And I out-tanked a Warrior

Sorry, off-topic

if you've ever played Final fantasy 1 you know where you choose like monk white mage black mage and a couple of other jobs and just put them together in a 4 man team and go out do your quests and what not to finish the game. Well instead of leveling all 4 (thats always a pain in the ass) you choose which job you want and look for people who need you lol so it plays like the old ff if you look at it that way. Yea its a whole lot of grinding but you'll be talking to much to notice the time go by. Its a fun game and the storyline is very interesting. and no you don't need a high level to get anywhere. You can roam just about anywhere at any level. How you do it is by sneaking by monsters. And there will always be high levels to help you around so its not like they aren't going to help you
