@hian: Ok, yeah, I agree with most of what you said, but lifting weights would be better for him. Carrying a large, overweighted backpack would be too risky, and doesn't make you buff. It may increase muscular endurance, but it won't rip the muscles, which is what he wants.
If you really wanna get buff, then I suggest bench pressing for your abs and your arms, and squats for your back and legs. Just remember, take it slow. Start out at a sufficient weight for you and work your way up. I usually bench 90 pounds and from there I increase reps and sets accordingly until I feel I'm ready too move up to 100. If you don't know what a sufficient weight for you is, then start out low. Say, 50 pounds? Not much, but it's a starting point at least.
