Default I found a laptop........

ok, today at work (recycling center) we get all kinds of stuff mostly junk.

I found s Gatway laptop built for XP thats all i know ......but alas there is no operating system on it. the XP home key is still on the bottom. but I don't have a disk.

but, thats not what I want to know at the moment I want to put linux on it. but I am a newb with that so what do I need?

i am going to go shower but ill be back after that.

well , couldn't you download linuxto a flash drive on your computer and transfer to the laptop ? I dunno
but nice find man nice find.

If you want to learn about linux, Ubuntu is a good option. Either download and burn it, or order one for free.
And if you need any help ask the community.

Ubuntu is good and all, but I find http://fedoraproject.org/ to be much more... useful.

But, enjoy Ubuntu, it's just as good

Ok, so you want to install linux but you never used it before. I wouldn't recommend you do that. Linux is not Xp is nothing way different. And even if you don't like it when you install it how are you going to reformat your laptop?

i recommend you download a knoppix live cd before you try to install linux on your laptop. ignore terkey, i doubt he's ever installed linux before
