As I have been saying, you need to look back upon history to the time whaen the US was created.
The US was origanally only supposed to be seperate states united under a "frontal" government, essentially speaking, the States were supposed to have more power and more of an origanal identity than they do today. US was supposed to be more or less a faction rather than a country, this all changed when The US Civil War broke out and threatened the stability of the US. Hence the meaning of "united".
Remember, the US was not origanally idealized by the fore father to be a country, everyone just looked at it that way.
Thus by all tecnicallity, we call ourselves by our birth state and then our country, as how it goes.
Simply put, Europe. You have the individual countries themselves, and then everyone of them calles themself European.

I wish I had an easier way of explaining this.
state equivlant (symbolically) to European countries
America equivlant to Europe.
There is no inbetween.
