They are all stand-alone games. They all have the same gameplay but each has diffrent features and story-lines.

Prophecies is the first Guild Wars, which is the most basic of them all, 6 core classes, moderate PvP and PvE.

Factions is the second Guild Wars, which has the most PvP features + 2 new classes, Assassin and Ritualist.

Nightfall is the third installment and is most based on PvE, in which Heroes come in. Heroes are like Henchmen, only thing diffrent is that you get to equip them and choose their skills. Also there's two new classes, Paragon and Dervish.

And no, you don't need any of the others to be able to play one of the games. Though, to be able to venture into the other lands you need to buy the rest.
