im at my friends house and look what he found on this site ahaha ima copy and paste it here
![]() The level 70 Warlock who just walloped you on World of Warcraft may be old enought to be you mother. In fact, she may be your mother. LIM YEE HUNG talks to an emerging group of gamers - aunties and uncles - who can just as "hardcore" as thier kids. The well-dressed man,his hair streaked with white, sits quietly at his terminal in the gaming centre at Peninsula Plaza. He cuts a diffirent figure from the other gamers, most of them half his age, who are banging thier key-boards,gnashing thier teeth and swearing intermittently. The 42-year-old, who did not want to be identified, is an uncle gamer, and a formidable one at that. He has four Level 70 characters in the World of Warcraft(WoW)online game-the highest level attainable in the game-and plays other PC games like Battle-field 2142 and Command And Conquer. Uncle gamers like him are a fairly common sight in gaming centres. But what is not known is that the aunties are now also playing along. It would appear then that the gaming arena is no longer the domain of the young. AsiaSoft Online, which distribute both WoW and MapleStory here, told Digital Life that it has seen "encouraging growth" in the middle-aged group of users over the past two years. Said chief executive Mr Addison Kang: "They(middle-aged gamers) enjoy the social and entertainment aspects and make use of online games...to form new friendships." Among themselves, the auntie brigade, may be equally at home with Korea soap operas as with mashing buttons, banging keyboards, and spending money on virtual equipment. Take Madam Yap Lay Eng. The energetic 48-year-old can spend up to 12 hours striaght playing MapleStory, a popular online title. "I will stop only to makan(Malay for eat) or to relax for a while, "chirped Madam Yap. She is now a powerful Level 136 mage, capable of causing fiery explosions to kill her enemies, among other potent spells. Nevermind the housework, the service coordinator is holding her own against her two sons who are avid MapleStory gamers too. She is just two levels lower than Jashua, 21 and way ahead of Jonathan, 22, who is only at Level 70. But Mdam Yap insists she is not a hardcore player."I play(the game) more to make friends," she said. She has spent about $300 so far, most of the money going into buying powerful equipment like charms and weapons or fashion accessories like hats and dresses in the game. But not all aunties are drawn to the cartoonish animations in MapleStory. Others, like Dr Angeline Khoo, prefer the serious, realistic 3D graphics of WoW. The 53-year-old is a researcher by day and a Night-Elf Druid by night, prowling the WoW universe for two hours nightly after work. Dr Khoo had initially begun playing for research-to study the game itself. But she soon found herself hooked. Like Madam Yap, she dislikes the conflict part of gaming and enjoys making friends. "I've already made many good friends online, some of them from half the world away," she say. "They are just like offline friends, except we meet in an online environment." Currently, her druid character is at Level 70, the highest level attainable in the game. Fun is just one plus point of gaming for the older set. There also health bebefits like increased resistance to neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease. In fact, Alzheimer's Australia has already endorsed gaming products like the Mintendo Wii for its physical and mental benefits to the elderly. The group's research and development manager, Dr Anna Conn, told the sydney Herald that gaming can "maintain brain health and reduce the risk of dementia during ageing". A source from the Singapore Action Group of Elders (Sage), agreed that games provide mental stimulation and keep the psychomotor skills of the elderly sharp. But the pointed out: " Older gamers should watch out against becoming addicted to computer games, since thier bodies are not so strong and will take a longer time to recover." Adapted from The Straits Times,Digital Life Page 8. God damn an old lady whooped our butts rofl!
