Default Web based MORPG

I never knew this place existed, so i thought i would pop in and blag some free advertisement

http://www.phpmorpg.co.uk
- (Project: PHPMorpg) The Coarse Lands

Im part of the team working on another(*sigh*) web based game thats free. Its crazy, when we first started doing stuff on it like 3 years ago there was hardly any decent web based MMOs but these days there are hundereds!

If you are wondering why is MORPG opposed to MMORPG we thought that it wasnt that "Massive" it was just a Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, although maybe in the future it may become massive

Anyway ours is not yet finished, so im not going to lie and tell you that you can go play it now because you cant , however we should have our first test version up fairly soon!

Main reason im posting here is because we recently redid our forums and as its all coming to a *finished* state i thought it would be nice to get some activity and see what other people would like to see in it. Also i wont lie to you before i do major advertising we will need to do some stress tests on the servers to see how many people it can handle as well as iron out any smaller bugs in the system.

If you are interested in a web based MMO that you dont need to download anything for (unless you are missing flash, in which case you need to be slapped) and is run by people with a sense of humor pop on over to our forums and post away!

If you are not interested dont bother, or feel free to start flaming

Hey!

Yeah just saw you on it, i will try and get some screenys together soon and some other media, we have tried to keep it all under wraps as long as we could as alot of other web based browsers seem to have things we thought were quite new when we first started (2.5 years ago).

We currently have 2 artists and 1 web developer behind it all so its not going as fast as we hoped, as its a "side project" although its quite ambitious with some of the stuff we have put in there... Although i will admit the first release will only have basic functionality while we gauge the server load and finalize the content for the other sections, i know its all vauge but closer it gets more info i can distribute...

Any support is better than none

100's of MMBRPG's? I can barely find more than a dozen ... or do you mean 100's of browser games in general .. in which case I would say there are 1000's, few worth mentioning though.

Anyway, it is customary to provide some glimpse of your game when bringing it before the public or else it looks like your post is purely self-serving ... toss us a bone, hell if it sounds interesting I may even add it to my "watch" list (see my signature).

Does your game feature quests? A walkable map? PvP? Dynamic Economics? Class or classless? Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Gothic, Space, etc... ? Xp? Guilds? etc ... etc... etc ...

If you wish to succeed, count on spending more energy marketing the game than making it (Hint .. this is why I'm asking these questions )

I meant Browser based RPGs, the MAIN reason why we decided to make ours was because we had just finished playing a fairly major MMO title and we wished we could play something similar in the university classrooms, or when someones in the office.

We had a look online and we couldnt find anything that suited what we wanted, we didnt want a game where you just collect soldiers then just say you wish to fight someone and you are returned with a load of text saying what happened in the battle. We wanted a game where you acctually had to participate in the fight, you acctually had some sort of attachment to your character like in most major MMOs.

The thing that defines an MMOs success is its community imo, and most web based games ive played seem to lack so many simple multiplayer features. Chat is a simple one, if everyone in the same area can chat then thats brining people closer together already. Trading... if people cant trade whats the point of collecting items if you can only sell them to NPCs, give them to friends or sell them to other players.

Granted and good point, ive asked some of the guys to get me some screenshots together, a few of the sections are missing small icons and also some of the artwork isnt finished for certain areas so its unfair to give you a half finished screenshot. As soon as i get some media for public viewing i will come post it!

We do have quests, i did one of them 5 minutes ago involving killing some orcs . However on the first release we are not happy with the amount of quests and need to tweak the actual quest system so you wont see quests immediatly in the beta test stage. However we should have it up to scratch near the end of test stage and will be in for the first "Live" server.

When you say walkable map i have pictures of world maps from older 2D games, no we will not have this. Although we do REALLY want to have this in later on after the first few updates. You can move around the world, like most MMORPG games we are only opening up certain areas of the map at a time. So for testing the world will be fairly small, expanding constantly through updates giving you more places to travel.

PvP... now thats a subject that i love talking about!
In game PvP is a massive part, ionce you have killed the hardest creature in game there is no other challenge... or is there? There will ALWAYS be someone better than you, so PvP keeps people battling each other.
We will not have the PvP system straight away for the initial tests although it is implemented, many a time ive pummeled other team members when testing, however we are still not happy with its stability. Due to the battling being Realtime it requires both people to be active and participating in the battle, if one of you disconnects or whatever dont worry AI will take over for you. However as this has alot of variable factors that can change during the fight we are wanting to give this alot more testing before we roll it out. The is one of the major points of our game the battle system its not a simple PlayerA > PlayerB, you both have to participate and even if Player A has better armour Player B could dodge a hit and kill Player A.

We have not implemented a crafting system at the moment, and this is on the back burner of things to do. I personally love crafting and undercutting other players. However this really ties in with a walkable map so you can explore and find the materials to craft, we were going to have it so monsters drop the materials you need to craft, as you can trade between players easily, so it would make a crafting system possible. So you can sell things to other players regardless if they are crafted or picked up from killing a creature.

There are classes, like alot of other things we are limiting the initial classes then expanding on them with updates. The great thing about the way we have developed this is that we can add new content in easily making updates for the game come thick and fast once its up and running.

Its a Fantasy setting so no spaceships or aliens, we have only created the first reigon for now. You will gain XP to level up in this game as although its the most used method for leveling up its also the most rewarding system in my opinion. You can gain XP from quests, killing creatures and other methods.

We have implemented a guild system, however for now it is just going to be a way for friends to group together and chat to each other, we have BIG things coming for guilds later on, such as possiblity of GvG realtime battles.

We have also implemented lots of other features such as monster hunting, where you learn more about the creatures you are fighting the more you come accross them. So the more you fight a given creature the more details you can get, such as where to find them and their stats. You can keep a listing of all these for trading with other people later so if playerA is searching for a specific creature you can try to find a hunter who is familiar with them and can tell you information about them. In the future this may be a tradable commodity making it worthwhile from a financial point of view for players to hunt monsters.

We have your usual shopping systems where you can enter towns in a given area and rest/sell/buy items, or get information on the area... We have lots of other features on the way however i cant talk about them for now as i dont want to commit myself to saying we will have XXXX then us not having time for it within the near future and people feeling let down.

Indeed, although we need a *finished* game before we start marketing it, and for now im just trying to gauge the communities out there and see what sort of feedback i get. When we are ready to enter testing phase i will get some more marketing resources and then when its finished will spread the word some more!

Thanks for asking the questions, this is the sort of thing i would LOVE to see on our forums so the other guys in the team can see what you guys are interested in seeing as well as getting some activity between other people. The community makes the game, so without a community our game will be pants

LOL you cant log in until servers are up the forums are the current hangout, until we open up the test server

do the mods have to OK every post > xxxx characters? as i just posted a massive response related to Whips questions and like my first post it says mods will have to look at it first...

Hopefully the mods will put this one up as soon as they can, as im still waiting on my other 2 posts to appear

*updated 07/06/07 - 8am*
Here is some current screenies from the game, as we are not finished there will most likely be some changes to what you see here, however the overall look should stay very similar to what we have at the moment.

If you click on the images you will get a larger version, if you are interested drop by our forums and ask any questions or offer any suggestions you may have...

The more activity we get on the forums the easier it will be for us to sort out test phases and get to the final "live" release, so any support would be appreciated!

It keeps merging my posts even though i want them as new ones, and i still havent seen the lengthy response i gave to Whip, any chance you can find them and put them up Mr Moderator?

*updated 07/06/06 50pm*
Mod can you add the missing post please++!

Thanks, hopefully it will sound even more intriguing once that post answering most of your questions and describing the game surfaces...

Awesome! check 3 posts back for my response to Whip and for some more details about the game!

Nice looking game so far. I like the overall look to it. If the gameplay holds up i'll definitely check it out. Keep up the good work, looks promising.
