perhaps its because if the parents were around/Alive/responsible then the main character wouldnt be able to grow as a person, and also, what kind of parent would actually let these kids (most of them teens) run around going to various sprit worlds or fight with cards and other random shenanigans? parents deter from the plot line. Simple as that.
