Can you recommend a game for me?

(Please excuse my terminology-I'm rather new to this stuff)

Can anyone recommend a PC-based multi-player shooter game for me?

~I'm looking for both free and p2p suggestions (free preferred)
~I've played Runescape and Wow and I like how these games allow you to build your character and participate in pvp. Are there shooter-type games similar to these?
~I guess I'm looking for a little more than running around in a confined area while shooting/being shot at.

Any help would be appreciated.

maybe you could try out Gunz, they have a lvl up type system where you can equip new weapons and armor.good amount of people play it too.

There's F.E.A.R. Combat which is basically F.E.A.R. without single player and it's free. Just make sure your computer can run it.And there's also America's Army.

Both games have very different gameplay so check both of them out.

And if you like WW2 there's Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
