Do I hear "Dial-Up"?
Well, I'll give you marks for originality, but sorry, it doesn't cut it. I actually ran an analysis, and the results show that Runescape takes more bandwidth than other MMO's. For the test, I played RS for an hour, with no other programs connecting to the internet at all, and then Guildwars for an hour under the same circumstances. Runescape downloaded more data than Guildwars. Similar tests by other users show the same thing for WoW, Anarchy Online etc. |

The reason behind the graphics is that their game engine takes low polys and low detail models, although the staff has been working hard to improve this. Also they use their own tools.
Now as Jabor has said with the bandwith, if they were too add more polys and detail with their engine, it would take more bandwith and they are trying to make the game as smooth as possible for everyone. |

That is very arguable.
Java is a very inefficient engine to program and MMO in, and as a result of that Runescape transfers data less efficiently than a dedicated MMO engine as used in other MMO's. Of course this doesn't apply to MMOFPS games, which require almost real-time updates and so suck up massive amounts of bandwidth, but compared to other MMORPG's, the data transfer required is much reduced by the dedicated engine. Java wasn't designed for streaming content, and thus doesn't handle things as efficiently as an engine built to stream data both ways, as in other MMOGs. Hence RS's higher bandwidth necessities compared to other games. People just make the mistake of thinking bad graphics = low traffic. |
