First, what is IRC?

IRC gained prominence when it was used to report on the Soviet coup attempt of 1991 throughout a media blackout. It was previously used in a similar fashion by Kuwaitis during the Iraqi invasion. Relevant logs are available from ibiblio archive.
IRC client software is available for virtually every computer operating system.

To connect to IRC you first need a client.
Here is a large list of clients that you can use:

Some of the clients that are recomended are
mIRC
ChatZilla (Firefox Addon)
Opera's Built in IRC client
And many others.

After you have installed your client of choice, fill out your "user name" settings and such.
How you connect to a IRC server is different for each client, and I suggest going to the client's help page/files and look up how to connect.
The important information to connect is given here:

Basicly, once you get on

1. type "/server irc.quakenet.org" <Enter> and you'll automatically connect

2. then type "/join onrpg" <enter> and ta-da ur there

I'll be in the name of Oturan

and it seems Onrpgers dont like IRC..

mIRC is the best windows client!
I think you should suggest user use SSL, and if they use SSL they will need to connect to port 7000.
