Default server questions

Ok some of you might remember me. I tried to create an MMO a year ago called Sosai Tales and failed. I decided to go graphic and webdesign and want to start a project but need help before I get too far into documenting.

I want to make a world where players can have house that are seen by everybody passing by. It will be 2D. Would it be possible to have 500 people on 1 server? What would the price be? Would it be cheaper to have a small world cut in to fourths with each section a smaller server?

Uh, well, as for server loads, I don't know. It all depends on just how much data you're passing around. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, if ALL you want to do is show houses and stuff. As the data flow increases, the more features you add, then you're going to have to start worrying about server stability, but for now, I think you're good with having mediocre server to handle the job. The question isn't whether or not you'll need multiple servers to handle 500 people, I think you're good with one that won't cost much. The question is, can you get 500 people to play on this idea?

well a lot of games dont have player owned housing that everybody can see. Theres obviosly more to it than just the game houses. And for the 500, I think its a reasonable goal. Other people want massive worlds with tens of thousands of people to play. Thats what I was after. I now know its far from possible, but setting up a small 2d world would be awesome. And hey, it can always get bigger!
