Default Heavenly Sword has 10GB of sound data alone

Heavenly Sword has 10GB of sound data alone

What's that about Blu-ray discs not being needed? According to Develop Magazine, Heavenly Sword has over 10 GB of sound FX, with three and a half hours of music, 4500 different lines of dialogue, and an hour and a half of cut scenes recorded in eleven (!) different languages. This means that without even counting the textures, art, models or anything else, the game couldn't fit on a normal DVD. It also means we're in for a hell of an aural treat when the game comes out next month.

Tom Covin, the audio lead for Ninja Theory, explains why they've put so much time and effort into their music and sound effects, "For me, sound is very 'immediate' to the player. Music has a well-established cultural language; sound is much less clearly delineated – but you can get straight to someone's emotional responses with it – there's little time for the brain to analyse. Sound is key in making this awesome weapon – the Heavenly Sword – come to life so you can sense its brooding power and almost hear it feeding off each kill."

The Develop article delves in deep into the sound theory and technology that was used in the development of Heavenly Sword and is a great read for those interested in some of the behind-the-scene machinations of one of the PS3's most anticipated titles. If only September would come a little quicker ...

This once again proves how Blu-Ray is a better format for games, making them feel more like entire Movies with hours of non-repeatative music and speech.

LOL, DAMN!

Usually 10 gigs is how much a normal PS2, Xbox, Wii, or 360 game is.

It's certainly not,a 1 layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 25GB of data and a double layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 50GB.

Huge indeed, the sound effects and music were pretty good in the demo, it's cool to see a game that's oiced in different languages, although french voices are still so-so, of course.

I'd like to see what the time length of all the sounds on the game are.
That would give a good example on exactly how they are managing this, because if they are just using a really shitty encoding that takes up ten times more space than most sound does, then I'm not impressed.

this game could be just going tech demo though couldnt it, so that is just showing the level of high def/next gen/whatever you want to call it, sound.

but tthen, i dont have a ps3, and I havent tried the game out. so I wouldnt know.

Well in the demo, the sound quality seemed much better than most games.

Mayby this was just because of the good voice acting(they got the guy who played Golum in lord Of The Rings for not just the voice, but the face of the evil kind guy ya'know. ) but the quality of the backround music was also better than that of most other games,
