I remember when I played little less than an year ago, the pets had levels. Does the pet increase its levels as it fights more? and the higher the level the higher the attack/speed right?

As long as you have it equipped it will get exp from the end of the battle. All of its stats go up with time, but when it comes to speed and such it's not all that significant. Damage however from level 60+ cells can be ridiculous and kill fully-armored people in one hit. = =
