And the Angels are the spawn of Adam, as the Lilim (Humans) are the spawn of Lilith. Both are needed for Third Impact (Thus Unit one's ingesting of the S2 engine and Shinjis involvement.) They are indigenous to earth, but haven't been around for a while (They don't really ever tell you why).

Oh, and Death&Rebirth is not completely useless, but it's not a required viewing.
It is more or less a quick summery of the series to allow you to "remember" everything in the series and to also strengthens your connection with the characters.
