My friend said it's like Spirited Away. But don't take his word for it, because I've never seen Spirited Away.

If you are into commercial anime and you haven't seen Full Metal Alchemist, I seriously suggest you see it.

Ju Oh Sei is highly reccomended it is only 11 episodes but the 2nd best 5 hours of my life

you can watch it at crunchy roll

(i am a guy and by episode like 7 he looks dam sexy)

hehe; if you want something similiar to elfen lied,
you can try blood+ or tenjou tenge (not very dark, though).

you should also try higurashi no naku koro ni,
although the storyline is a bit confusing since it's mostly flashbacks, etc.
warning though, it's very disturbing and contains little children doing gory acts ;x
