Yeah, it appears that Gainax is really into parodies right now, ever since the did FLCL.

Anyway, there a very few, if any, animes that act similar to Tengen Toppa. Given the next year, I wouldn't be surprised if something similar poped up.

And about the death, it was in the story to show to the audience who the real hero of the story is. The one to rise from believe he is but a tiny spec in the Universe, to understanding that by believing in himself, he can change the universe.
