Awesome? All I saw was people screaming their heads off and whacking objects with a stick/chain. Their silly strikes take so long to recover leaving them wide open. I'd like to see what they can do without their stupid stick. In the one where 3 guys jumped on one guy, they tripped over themselves and they hardly fought like their life depended on it.

1 year - Karate

Quote:
Take tae kwondo, since we're on the topic:
Tea kwondo corriculum is almost the exact same as karate, even so, tae kwondo practitioners have a tendency for being worse at actual combat than karate practitioners. This is due to the fact that most people practise TKD as a SPORT, not a martial art. They fight using olympic rules, and protective gear. And the spend a lot of time on tricking, even though tricking(meaning fancy jump kicks etc) actually isn't a part of the traditional TKD techniques.

But, let's say you have a person practising tae kwondo, and his main focus has been training fanatically on the few basic attacks, and simply making himself stronger and faster, you would have a fighter on par with that any other art.

Take muay thai for instance: TKD actually has all the techniques of muay thai pluss more, but because of the harsh traning that is the norm amongst muay thai fighters, they are usually better. However, if a TKD practitioner trained as harshly as a muay thai fighter, there would probably be only small differences between the two. Actually, my bets would be on the TKD practitioner, because TKD actually has throws and locks amongst it's techniques, something which most muay thai fighters have no inclination about practising.

Im sick an tired of people blaming styles for the the incompetence of individual fighters. In the end, if you don't work hard enough, and spend time gaining experience, you will be beaten even by petty thugs(which is often the case in todays degenerate martial schools).
Quoted for truth. Absolute truth. I'm happy someone can see this. I don't have much experience in martial arts as of yet, with only about one year in Karate and still being of somewhat low rank, yet I've always thought this was self evident, that sport fighters and real fighters are two different kinds of warrior, but few people realize the difference. They either think that real fighting is what it's all about, and scoff sportists, or think that "playing martial arts" for a few days a week is good enough because chances are they won't actually have to use it outside of the the tourny ring.

One of the things my teacher did for me as I began to show enthusiasm when I joined Karate was loan me books, making sure I understood that being a warrior wasn't not just fancy kicks and punching someones lights out, and one of these was "The Martial Way" by Forrest E. Morgan, and while some of the things (Such as dietary knowledge) are a bit outdated (Having been written in the early nineties), the basics of what he talks about are quite clear and, I believe, something everyone should take the time out to think about. He talks that, The Way of the Warrior, is not just based in some fighting style, but in how we train and live, that anyone can be a fighter, but being a Warrior (Notice the capital) is something altogether different. The book itself is cheap enough off of Amazon, and I suggest everyone (Though I suppose that is impractical) give it a good once-over at least.

Now that we have all the philosophy out of the way, the style of Karate I practice is the United Studios of Self Defense style of "Shaolin Kempo," based off the style that was pioneered by Fred Villari. Most martial artists I've talked to since seem to think that the company (An off-shoot of Villari) is pretty farcical, demanding outrageous fees for most of their services and not even allowing their instructors full ownership of their dojo's. But in the end, I found a good instructor thats only affiliated (Though I'm still not entirely sure of the relationship) with the company and is quite good at she does (e.g teaching Karate). Besides, as I said above, any style can be good if practiced properly. After I've spent a few years in this style, I plan on learning traditional Japanese Shotakon karate, and then some form of Judo or Jujitsu.

Yeah, but if you walked past some guy getting jumped by eight other guys, and somehow winning by doing that, you'd say, man, that guy is cool.

Krav Maga? Wow, I didn't even know that was available to the public. Atleast that's what someone told me.

Though I wouldn't know I'm not in a particular style. I just get suspended for throwing punches.
