Default Do you Believe in Talent?

I'm just curious about all of your opinions.

Do you believe in being born with talent in a specific field? My parents do. A great example of this would be in sports. Let's take basketball as an example, and Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan, as many of you know, is the greatest basketball player of all time. Well, lets compare him to some random dude on the streets:

If both of them practiced 2 hours a day, everyday, from age 7 - 20, using the same courts, equipment, same living conditions... etc. (basically rule out any variables or sources of error), my parents believe that Michael Jordan would still be much better, simply because they believe that he was "born with an amazing talent" for basketball.

I'm still unsure of this. I'm pretty sure there is no scientific way to prove that it is possible to be born with talent for something, but amazing athletes such as Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, and - dominating his sport right now - Roger Federer, make me think about this a bit.

What do you think? Do you believe that it is possible to be born with a talent for something? If it's true, then someone could go through their whole life without knowing that they could be amazing at basketball, or something like that. Pretty freaky.

Seriously though, if you just take a look at all of the athletes... there will always be those select few who are ahead of the pack, who are number 1 and true clearcut winners, even though ALL work very hard.

Do you believe in talent? Or that hard work can achieve anything? - (Don't get me wrong, if an untalented person practiced a lot more than a talented one at something, then the person with no natural talent would become better).

I believe in talent. Michael Jordan was'nt actualy that good in basketball during his high school year. His freshman year of highschool he did'nt even make the basketball team. I believe that it takes hard work to become good at something. I play basketball, and I think im pretty good, but I practice everyday and work my hardest. I beleive some people come be born with a talent because god gave them that talent, but it all comes down to how hard you work.

Michael Jordon was badass when he practiced.

you'll never be excellent at something you have no natural talent for, but with hard work and practice, you can become at least reasonably good.

At the same time, natural talent is no good without lots of hard work and practice, no matter how good you are. Anyone who's great at anything whether it be writing, playing an instrument, or a sport, will tell you that.

No, I think hard work is the key. Although, some pick up on it quicker, and some don't pick up on it at all.

Bobby Orr owns hockey.

EDIT: And I think some great athletes would be offended if you went up to them and said your just born with it. All the hark work and practice they put into getting where they were.

And I voted no because I don't think you're born with talent. But yes I do believe in talent, everyone has one.

Research now shows that the lack of natural talent is irrelevant to great success. The secret? Painful and demanding practice and hard work.

Depends on fate :\...
Some people might react differently to different situations.
Like if 2 twins just did the same thing 1 might get it more then the other and apply it more then the other.

I do. I always see child prodigies and they're too young to practice up to the point they've reached.

i beleive in talent, though i also believe its useless unless you put huge efforts into it.
im tallented musicaly, i play guitar, piano, bass, all very well, and learned faster then anyone else that were in my classes when i was younger, but, i dint just pickup the instrument and started playing better then evry one, i practiced hours each day(wich i still do) to get were i am now.
on the other hand, my friend who has been playing guitar for as long as me, and practicing as much as me, cant play nearly as well as me, and he only mastered that instrument throughout the years.
therefore, yes, i do beleive there is talent.
