Hi


I was wondering how you program a forum (No I am not going to steal this sites traffic) but I just wanted to make an small IM forum sort of simular to this one - design wise. I only want it to hold like 20 members and anyone can just view it.

I know HTML, JAVA and remember I just want it simple with things like:

Little icons and smilies

Different fonts

A little window

Buddy List

Profile

and show who is online

You wont learn it here nor anywhere else you gotta be really smart to do this, so might as well stop now, you wont ever do it unless you know a shit load of programming, your better off not learning and going out and downloading php2.0 an add it on your site.

Hey, I don't really know what PHP 2.0 (aside that it's the second major release of PHP) is, or what's special about that release. (funny you should mention PHP 2.0, because apparently PHP is at release 5.2.4, 2.0 was released in '96)

As for a simple forum, I don't think it'd be too hard. I had a really basic messaging system on my website a while back, coded in PHP with MySQL, and it didn't seem like it would be too hard to expand it into a forum system.

To acutally make the forums, you'd probably want to learn PHP. Here's a link to the guide I learned from: http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_intro.asp

Yes, PHP's latest release is 5.2.4. However, I believe Tivoilos is referring to PHPBB2, located at http://phpbb.com/

PHPBB2 is a pre-programmed forum that you may easily install on many of todays web hosters; they even provide "one-click scripts". If you just want a forum, you can turn to one of these pre-programmed forums such as PHPBB2, InvisionFree, SMF, and more. If you want custom features that you want to program yourself, you'd probably want to learn PHP. The web site Eriond has kindly mentioned is an excellent starting position.

Dude Sikosid, Erionde just told you. PHP. It seems like you are trying to learn so many new things at one time. You should pace yourself, bro.

SourceError has a point there. Take your time, and don't skim the tutorials and not bother to try things yourself. Creating an entire custom forum with PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript without any pre-made items such as a web text-editor can be quite challenging. But as Eriond already pointed out, making an exceptionally simple forum shouldn't be that hard. Aim for smaller things; build a solid foundation, then build up and add to it.

Sorry it's just I am a doing things person. I multitask. But also I must point out that I grasp things really fast and easily and read fast ( I read all the lord of the rings books in 2 weeks)
