Lol, you kidding or what? I usually have to buy up to 50-60 of something food, and its only enough for one or two instance runs. Its like, only one mob out of 50 mobs drops something edible for my pet.. So.. yes, you have to buy food, the food that drops from mobs isnt enough.

lvl 70 hunter, never had to buy food and my pet never gets pissed off with me or dies so never need to feed it so no i'm not kidding

it deppends on what type of pet you have if you have cat.bear.boar.wolf just pick up fishing.if you are best friend with you pet(lvl 6 loyalty)then you have to feed it once per hour(if it doesn`t die).you also lose allot of loalty if you don`t heal it in batle.
