Doesn't make a difference. What you see is only your school. How can that account for the emos or goths all around the world?

at my university, manga and anime are overly common among the people that study japanese.

it's a cliché, but it's a common truth too.
I actually dare to bet that more than half of the people that study japanese just do so to be able to read and understand anime, i don't think a lot of them are actually planning to go there in the future to actually work.

i have live witnessed a few guys from that class discussing drawings saying "oh look, this picture clearly shows more emotion than the previous one, i copied this from a Magic Card".

i might be generalising this in a way, i won't deny, but nevertheless, japanese is a hype in the west, and for over 50% solely for the hype of anime.
there are also a few emo's in the japanese class, but i'm not aware wether they watch anime or not. (i don't think the girl does)

i would link anime more to the common japanese lifestyle hype rather than to emo lifestyle

Because they think that by being emo or goth, they are being different from everyone else. So, they try to be as different as possible, and like things that most other people don't like. They prolly don't really like it, they just pretend to, to be different.

Same thing where I live, most of the emos and goths watch it. Everyone who takes japanese class watches it too.

The only time I ever heard anyone talk about anime in my school was in my drafting class where a few guys were talking about gunadam and no one in my drafting class is emo.
