What kind of battery does the DS use? That's really where your answer is. I doubt it'll be a NiCaD, NiMH, or Alkaline, which really only leaves LiIon and LiPoly batteries, both of which run the risk of exploding without the proper care (LiPoly especially), and can be overcharged, which usually results in the battery expiring much faster than it's due. Most Lithium batteries are rated for 1500 or more recharges, and there's no fear of the memory effect in 'em (though overheating can be an issue). Still, never charge your battery for over 24 hours, it's a recipe for disaster. My tip? If you don't have some sort of charger that alerts you as to when the battery is charged, go by temperature. If it's hot, it's done.
