The questing in this game is fairly generic, and doesn't do anything to stand out.
However, gameplay does not revolve around questing. The leveling process is a grind, and yes, past level 10, you'll be (with a few exceptions) grinding in a balanced six-man group the whole time (tank, dps, healer. Becomes more complicated later).
The world in FFXI is absolutely huge, there's no question about it. There are many different places to see-- all of the deserts, forests, and snowy areas are there, the latter complete with aurora borealis... and, some of them are absolutely beautiful. On top of that, there are many otherworldly zones, that take place in different "dimensions", or simply completely fantasy-inspired areas.
The game, unlike other MMORPGs, revolves around several (linear) storylines... a possible total of 6 or 7 to experience, for each nation and expansion pack. These stories are told through cutscenes, NPC interaction, and progress through "missions".
