^ Often, in animes set in our world, the creators will try to create subtle differences in nationalities. In some manga and anime, almost every japanese character has hair in various tones of brown and black, and all of them have black eyes.
However, japanese shouldn't necessarily have squinty eyes, as most japanese actually have occidental eyes, not the slanted ones of the average asians.
This is actually normal. Even my gf, who's vietnamese, has occidental eyes. Her eyes are bigger and more round than mine for instant.
Anyways, in anime, apperances are often meant to convey a symbolical message about the characters personality, not just to show the watcher how they look.
You will see that the blond-orange hair thingy is typical for loud-mouthed "try-harders" like naruto and ichigo from bleach etc.
It's also meant to give a certain flamboyance to the the anime or manga, and make obvious distincitions between the differnt character in the cast.
If this wasn't done, the cast could run the risk of looking bland and boring.
Besides, if you went to tokyo, or Osaka, you would see that a lot of young people have dyed hair, wear contacts and have the coolest most insane fashion-clothes that exists, so even though, only nerds a and people who get paid cos-play, a lot of japanese people look like characters out of movies, fashion-magazines, and make the western fashion look drab and boring in comparizon.
