If you charge your ipod and your laptop for too long, will it overcharge?

I think it will over heat.....not over charge. Well, at least the laptop.

My charger overheats a little
It starts to get hot after the laptop has been completely recharged
I like to leave the charger on because it makes my screen brighter

Yeah you could, but you can set it to where you can have a portable screen brighter.

About the laptop, no.

When you have the charger plugged in, the computer uses that for power instead of the battery.

Technically, no. They're programmed to know when to stop charging, however, the prolonged direct connection to the electrical outlet will eventually force your MP3 player to overheat and malfunction.
