I know there are a lot of programs out there (like playerworlds.. etc) to make 2d tile based games, and that real gamers (even myself) are sort of opposed to playing a game made with such programs due to the lack of any real creativity and such. They feel somehow fabricated to me.
Anyway, I am working on programming my own 2d tile based game (where every line of code is done by me, from coding the animation and fps to the map editor). Do you think this sort of game could become popular or would people still feel the same way. The game is in java, so its obvious its not done using any of the programs out there. What does everyone think? |

I think it could be popular, but would it be browser based or download because as far as I know, with Java, you can do both.

Its gotta be pretty damn addictive. There've been plenty of games like that I could name. You mention playerworlds? I was addicted to this game on BYOND called Mystic Journey. Seemed like a 2D version of Everquest classic.
Mind explaining your ideas to me? |

i think what puts most people off those games straight away is the ripped, non-matching graphics that they all use. If you make your own people will try the game and if you give it somthing unique people will keep coming back.

For new, free MMORPGs to stand out, they need to be innovative. Features never/rarely seen elsewhere, for example.

The one thing you do not want is rpgxp graphics. Its not exactly the fact that your using that engine that makes people not want to play. Its if you leave the gui setup to the default and use those over used graphics. The engine really is not the problem, If you move all the gui around and make a custom one and then use custom gfx people will love it. Why start from scratch when an entire base is their for. What I would do is grab a stable engine, then start to optomise, switch to iocp instead of winsock, try taking cpu usage down and memory usage. Also make big maps. Then when you do that it will be a great engine. Like I said starting with marrige or konfuze or the likes is not all the problem. Its the games that dotn change it enough and leave it so people know the engine is their. You need to work towrds covering the engine up.

yea well thats one thing u gotta hate. i see rpg maker xp sprites all the time in all different mmorpgs. but if u intend to sprite it yourself and giv it some cool content. u gotta say that on ur web page u made them. people just love to see some effort actually being put into 2d tile games. i would too. please announce when it comes out.
