sorry for this VERY n00b question about magician's bolts

guys, when you add more points into fire, cold and lightning bolt, they're suppose to increase in damages or in bolt numbers? for some reason when I increased points for my fire bolts ( AND pressed that from 1/4 to 4/4 thingy) and use it, just 1 bolt pops out. But I've seen videos of people using more than 1 in a go, I'm not sure why.... can you guys help?

You gotta click the arrow to the right to choose the level you want to use, than drag it to the quickslot.

adding points just increases the bolts number.. damage per bolt is 1*matk so by lvl 10 any elemental bolt would hit the enemy with 10 bolts
