what i'm trying to do is get a portfolio together from working in freeware and royalties projects and then once you have proof of your work you should try throwing it out there, maybe in an indie forum or somthing and see if you get a bite.

Here's the usual path of "what to learn" (in chronological order) when it comes to C++:
Basics (text-based/console) --> Win32 API/GDI --> DirectX or OpenGL or possibly SDL Before the last step though, it is often useful/easy to learn an easy library like Allegro or CDX or Irrlicht (I'm not sure on Irrlicht's difficulty as I haven't tried it). After that, get some good experience in 3D programming if you think that's something you'll want to do (DirectX and OpenGL are both 2D and 3D, depending on how you use them). Also learn some networking protocols (DirectPlay or similar, maybe winsock/winsockets/whatever but I'm not sure if that's actually commonly used in the gaming world). Good luck!
