also have you looked at the dates associated with those numbers? They had 5 million active subscribers back in early 2006 i believe.
July 2007, WoW passed the 9 million active subscriber mark, and its going up still.

and no, active subscribers and accounts are a different thing. If you were to look at the account #, it would be a much larger number.
