And I'm not sure if my opinion is valid,since I've never played both games either.But WoW is based off of one fantasy-type world,I think its medieval?But FFXI from a non-players perspective seems to combine many nationalities and eras into one.
Not to mention,I have a low-end system doing only with 256+ RAM and an ATI x200 series card.FFXI's requirements are very low.In fact,256 is the recommended maximum requirement.But WoW wants 512 MB RAM >.<

well i started again yesterday and i wont say its under populated at all since i saw many linkshells (guilds) roaming around Bastok in fairly large groups plus search in noob areas brings up alot of players so even though the maps huge u still know they are there and u can party with em honestly id say start on slyph server since a few onrpg members play there and once ur in range to party with em im sure they would be glad to help ya out and yes the reqs are low so dont worry if ur system only meets min reqs for gameplay it will still play smoothly
so if ur thinking that u wanna try the game but havent done it go grab a copy and give the free trial a go
