Default Official Debate of the Month

This month we are going to have an interesting debate, which may lead into something more. The question is:
Do you believe "There are no atheists in foxholes" is a true statement. This debate will not go over the belief of god in general terms but exactly as the quote intends it to be talked of. If you do not know this quote please google it. As normal we have will the general rules which are:
RULES.
I suggest you read these before you actually post.
1. No Flaming/Trolling/Spamming of any sort. This section is the debate section, and many of the topics here are serious. Flaming anyone for any reason will be prohibited. It doesn't matter who started it. If you're going to flame someone else, you're going to be punished. Trolling and spamming will also be prohibited. If you're going to say something that doesn't contribute to the discussion; don't say it at all. If you disagree with someone, try and say so in a nice manner.

2. Respect the opinion of others. Although this might be hard for some to grasp, debates are going to be much better if people respect other people's opinions. We all have different opinion, and we should all respect the fact that others have their opinions. If you notice someone is really stubborn and refuses to think the way you do, then perhaps it's time to stop debating. Debates are just another way for you to share your ideas with others. It's a way of learning how others think. The point of debates is not to necessarily "win" but to enjoy the fact that you got to share your ideas with others.

3. Don't take things too literally. Debates are meant to be debated. Someone is supposed to give one side, and others present the other side of the argument. Then they go at it; trying to prove the other wrong by sharing their ideas and opinions on the subject. Don't be too literal on a subject if it's going to end the debate.

4. Don't be bias. Everyone is equal. Don't judge others on what they did before. Don't judge on if they are a Moderator or not. Don't judge others on whether or not you like them or if they are your friends. Judge people on what they say and their ideas. Just because someone is a Moderator doesn't always mean that they are right all the times. You don't have to think that your friends are always right. Read what someone types first before looking at their name.[/quote]With that over, I'd like to give a few more ideas on what could be debated. You'll notice that my old ideas are included in this list, and that's because I think I organized this better.

Breaking any of these rules will result in at least a one point warning (3 points results in a 7 day ban). Please follow these rules this topic will be moderated heavily and breaking these or any of the forum rules will result in at least a warning, some posts might result in as much as a 7 day ban right away.

I think they do it's just that they can't comprehend that there might possibly be a supreme being up there that created us. If you look at it one way only gullible people would believe in it, but then if you look at it in another way there has to be a reason, I think the following:

- They believe there was a God and he is dead.
- They believe there is something that created us just not any of the following religions.
- They don't care what happens after they die enough to believe in a religion.

"There are no atheists in foxholes" means that atheists may possibly believe in a God deep down, and if something crazy were to happen like the end of the world, their belief would suddenly rise.

There are atheists in foxholes.
This debate doesn't seem like it's going to go anywhere at all.

I'm pretty sure the quote applies to EVERYTHING (as in, your on your way out...or damn close to it...you know your near death, do you start to believe in God, or, a higher form?)

Personally...I believe this to be true. And, if not...the people are fools. Its great and grand to believe that there is no God, and believe science and prove whatever...but why not ask for forgiveness on your way out? You cover your *** either way. On one hand, your dust. On the other hand, you make it into heaven (should there be one)

In my eyes, its a win win. I can't see it not being that way.

With that said, yes, I think if the end of the world happend, they would be the first ones into chruch.

I think they bleive in god, but are scared to beleive in something that might not be real.

Why should god show himself?

If the only way you bleive is if he proves himself, why would he want you?

I think it depends on the atheist's background. For instance, if the atheist has parents that are religious. I think the atheist part is just rebelling and they are the type that are inclined to have a "change of heart" later in life when things a) fall into place b) things get rough, deathbed, etc. I think a lot of atheists are just rebellious. I myself am an atheist. Funny thing is my parents are pretty religious and I used to be, though I don't think of myself as believing there really is a god.

I'm somewhat athiest. I believe that IF there is a god, he would judge me on the way I lived my life, not by my beliefs. Seriously a god can't expect everyone to believe he is real without proof, so incase there is a god, I'm going to take the safe way and believe that there MIGHT be a god.

So I don't believe in god but think there could be a god.

There isn't really a way to discuss that topic deeply, since it is different with each person.

You can't really say people who are atheists will believe in an omnipotent being when facing something extreme.

I for one, am an atheist, and have no interest in suddenly believing in something of that sort, just because something is happening.

If God himself, or whatever feels like smiting me down, or appearing infront of me, I'm all for it, and then I will believe.

But until he decides to chill with me, or own me, nothing will change.
