Unless they changed that in the US version, you cannot screw up your character until lvl 50 --- there's two things to be decided that can't be undone, and the Transmuter selection at lvl 50 is the first. In Europe, the nation selection at lvl 95 can only be changed with a cash shop item, so that's the other chance to mess up. The game completely changes at lvl 95 when it turns PK, you will not be able to chat with friends that are in the wrong nation during gameplay, nations override parties (i.e. you will PK party members if you aren't careful and they are in the wrong nation, and you can't chat with them) etc.

Stats: "follow the growth, Luke". You character screen shows the requirements for your next rank up, which happens every 10 levels (the lvl 20 requirements are bugged, though, they can't be reached before lvl 21 unless you get a skill rank up before that). This growth requirement tells you how to place your stats until lvl 60, if you have excess stats, either keep them unallocated or use the item requirements as guideline.

Use the items that are meant to be used with your class.

You buy the skills from an NPC; you have a number of slots available which increases as you rank up your skill level. You place skill points into these skills to level them up. You can always remove skill points again to assign them elsewhere, and you can also unlearn a skill when it's at lvl 1 and you remove another lvl from it. Both costs a bit of money, but that amount raises with the skill ranks --- so getting rid of newbie skills kater in the game is very cheap. And there aren't a lot of high level skills.

I played an archer, so I can't make suggestions for good starting skills.

Went back to Cabal for a bit, but PK isn't my thing at all, so I don't know how long I'll stay this time.

omg stop talking bs plz ...

1st

choosing a nation just indicates that you can talk to your nation on the WAR channel (c7) and you get more honour for killing the opposite nation .. before youve reached 95 and chosen your nation its impossible to understand anyone on the warchannel (except the chatroom)

2nd

you dont have to use the items that are meant to be used with your class.
(in general: Martial set for PvE and Armour Set for PvP)

3rd there are more than enough high lvl skills in the game .. (completer and trans skill for example ..) just to learn them you have to earn some good money ...

@kablammo:

dont upgrade skills higher than skilllvl9 .. after 9 the cd will just increase to unknown hights and it will be difficult to combo with strong skills

oh and read the combo mode up (posted in several threats) .. your most important "tool" for your entire cabal life

Some skills you MUST lvl it to lvl 20

Such as magics like Cannons. They must be lvl 20.

G.master skills should not pass over 9 or else the cd is long.

So some skills requires to be lvl 20.

And not all must stay at 9...
