It was directed by Isao Takahata and written by someone else. It was produced by studio ghibli though. I also recommend watching ghibli's "The Cat Returns" as well. Excellent movie.

Holy... Custom Title!?

I liked the distinct Japanese viewpoint it was told from. Not just the fact that it was set in Japan, but that the characters have very distinct Japanese attitudes and personalities. One of the cools things about watching foreign movies.

There is much more to this movie than just a sympathy play; the characters, the art, and the general storytelling are all phenomenal.
