Default My opinion on Guild Wars.

Well, just a mini-review, really.

I've played an guy to level 20 on this game, elementalist methinks. I stopped at the quest where you have to go from one place to another, trying it with hencies seeing as its extremeley hard to get people to help.

I've allso got a warrior/monk to around 11, stopped her because i was on an impossibley hard mish, den zajuun or something i think, dunno How i got past it with my elementalist.

To be honest, its a good game. And maybe because i phail, but i find the 'Skill' aspect to be too heavy. Its not newbie freindly. Wich i personally think is a rather important aspect of games. Now maybe its because ive only played the factions campain, and i've heard its the hardest one.

But there are a few things that really gripes me about this game.

It relies too heavily on team-work.

Now, dont get me wrong, i love some team-work and strategy in a game, but guild wars takes it to the point where your going to HAVE to max out your party with henchies otherwise your going to get completeley owned if you try and solo. Unless youve got great gear and are extremeley skilled.

It is hard to get team members.

Most people in the game - aside from some level 20s arent really bothered with teaming if theyre not doign the same quest as you. Now this wouldnt be so bad. But the fact that the game is not open-world just reduces the possiblity of getting a team by about 50-80 percent in my eyes.

Most of the time ive got a team in MMORPGS through "Hey, you doing the quest <name>" to people who ive met outside, they say yes and we go on happy adventures in a boat made of money with a talking dog named Bernard.

...*ahem*

I've very rareley got teams by just standing in a town and shouting: LFG <Quest>

Relies on skill to much.

Now, dont get me wrong, i like a bit of skilled required to play a game, but to be honest, the only people who are going to get the full amount the game has to offer are the veterans / elite players.

Classic example, im trying to do this Go to <Person> quest on my elementalist, with a team of hencies, then we run into a huge group wich is backed by one of those elite mob people.

Team wipe.

Now this wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt so Damn Hard to get a team of acuall players...

Though, this is just my point of view, and im glad that youve managed to get enjoyment from this game that i- so far have completeley failed to see.

To each his own opinion, then.

I'll try to address some of you gripes, though.

I take it that you only have the GW:Factions campaign? Well it is widely considered the least liked among all three campaigns, with steep requirements needed to proceed to past certain parts of the storyline, timed missions, etc. As such, some of its towns are less populated compared to those in Prophecies, Nightfall and the expansion Eye of the North.

And I hate Zen Daijun too -- for some reason the place lags for me horribly the few times I've brought my native characters (assassin and rit) and Tyrian Ranger through.

Also, while the fast leveling to max (20) is a godsend to experienced players, the learning curve can be a bit steep for new players starting out in Factions. Prophecies and Nightfall are more forgiving to newbies, and better instill valuable strategies like pulling, kiting, aggro management, and the like.

As Anet would say it, it's not an MMORPG per se, it's a Competitive Online RPG (CORPG). The missions are designed to be done with a team. If you can't find one, there are henchmen that would help out. Going solo can be done, but it's mostly for the challenge, or to tailor a build to farm a specific area to kill specific monsters to get their drops.

Gear is not as important here as other games. You can craft good armor, and for certain drops, get good weapons from Collectors for your professions. I would agree to skills though, both skill (how well you play the game) and Skills (the spells, signets, etc. that you put in your 8-skill bar). Well it does take a bit of practice, and later on a lot of new Skills will be made available for your picking.

What I've observed is that people will group more for missions rather than quests. With a plethora of quests given to you, you will be hard pressed to find one that will be doing your quest the same time as you. But then again, most quests are readily done with the proper complement of henchmen.

Also, people in may not have much time to play GW, so they're there to do just what they came for. They may also be on their second, or third, or fourth character, and are rushing through those parts to get them over with, using the most efficient means.

That may be part of your quest, or it's a boss that spawns there. If it's a quest you have no recourse but to slug it out with him. Rethink your strategy. Go for the enemy's healers first, then their damage dealers. Observe the group movements -- you may have inadvertently aggroed more than one group. Flag your henchmen away at a safe distance, and have a flatbow/longbow handy to shoot at one guy to "pull," or draw them to your group without the other groups noticing you.

If it's a boss there may be other ways to go to your objective without aggroing him -- you can always come back later when you're max and beat the crap out of him heheh.

To help address your problem with skill and partymates, I would suggest that you get yourself in a good guild. Try not to join those that spam Guild invites. There are forums (like GWOnline or GWGuru) that host guild recruitment threads, you can browse through them and be able to find a guild that suits your purposes -- one that is willing to help out new players with the game mechanics, and that would help you do your quests/missions.

You can also PM me in-game if we catch each other online, I have lots of stuff to do in Cantha too. PM me your IGN and let's see if we can do some stuff together

Somehow I miss the whole point of this topic, maybe becouse Ive never had problems in PvE since I started with NF.

Wonder If I could hero/hench realm of gods too if it were possible, its just that easy with heroes. Imbagons are just imba.

Good for you then, with NF's Heroes I henched most of Prophecies, then did hero/hench in Nightfall. A month later Nightfall release I bought Factions. I can empathize with some of the OP's points about his woes in starting out in Factions.

OP only has Factions from what I deduce, and some game concepts can be missed with the "rush-to-level 20" mode that was implemented in that campaign.

I currently am trying out Fissure of Woe with my warrior and her three heroes, only a 4-man group. 2-man 6-hero has been already done, I'm just doing it for the challenge.
