Default Game Development Survey

Hello,

I am Game Engine developer (http://www.onrpg.com/boards/77725.html).

In behalf of other programmers who makes Game Engines, I would like to take a survey on what current and aspiring Game Hobbyists/ Game Designers look for in a Game Engine.

Please note. I'm speaking of the homebrew scene. So, choosing an answer should also consider alloted-time for the development. Of course, everybody will want a multiplayer 3D game engine for their games.

Choices
1. 2D or 3D?

2. if 2D:
a. Tech: (Tile-based / Isometric / Hexa?)
b. Genre: (RPG / Strategy / Arcade / Other?)

3. Multiplayer / Single?

4. Side-scrolling Platform?

5. Please type-in any wish list.

could a side-scroller RPG really sell? i don't mean like selling and making money from it but more of a "success".

btw, a mario rpg was released in GBA but it works like the usual RPG using the Mario sprites.

that's something to think about.

I would say your question is a tad vauge, as depends if you are targetting a hand held device, a PC, a console, a web based system... The reason there are soooooo many engines around these days is because everyone wants to do something different, there isnt 1 engine fits all...

If you are assuming that people are going to be making simple PC mmos, as this is what the community seems to be geared towards. I would say they will want 3d as 2d takes too much artwork and you can find more 3d modellers these days than decent 2d artists. They will want multiplayer but i guess it would be more than the simple multiplayer implementation they would want something that would allow them to integrate a client/server architecture with it... However as i said everyone will want something different...

IMHO, saying "something different" also sounds vague. I've checked Maplestory and it's something promising -- it has the "something different" factor to think it is an RPG but played as side-scroller platform game. This elements have long been in the industry.

Perhaps a mix and much of the current available genre will surely make a "something different".

Exactly, most people who are part of the homebrew scene just want to make *something*, they dont know what it is and they dont know who they are targetting. They just want to make something fancy...

So for that reason you asking them what engine/framework they would want for an unknown project, with an unknown audience. So im just making clear the fact that on the homebrew scene most people are not sure what they want.

Im all for people trying to get things stirred up on the development scene and trying to get the community thinking and doing things... however this thread is comparable to some random driver what car they would want...

creek i've been thinking up a game concept for quite a while now and could do with somone like yourself to help with the coding etc.

If you wouldn't mind making a fairly specific game engine then drop me a pm.

(i'm a 3D modeler)
