Default 3D like 2D/Anime?

Hi,

is there a way to let 3D look like 2D/Drawn/Anime?
No, I don't mean Cel-Shading since this still looks like 3D :/

It took me some time to figure out what you meant. What gives your 3d model it's depth is the skin. You would have to skin it in the way that it looks flat

This wouldn't exactly fall under general programming.

Well can't the engine process the skins to make them look flat?

I believe that would all have to be done in the rendering process. I'll do a bit of research and get back to you if I find anything.

cell shaded is about the closest that is possible, the engine can't tell which edges are supposed to be thickened as in anime it's not normaly just the outline. Also most skins are pre renderd onto the model so if you could get it to work somehow without the textures baked onto the model then you'd need a pretty good pc to run a game that has a fairly low poly count, cell shading is kind of the closest that you can get.

Also in anime perspective is often off but it just gives the impresion of deph etc. i can't think of a way you could make an engine emulate that...

Don't you think if it was possible it would have been done?

Are we talking about a Ragnarok style game?

't think so. I think he wants to make a full 3d game with the appearance of a 2d comic style.

Okami is probably the closest to this followed by the 360 naruto game but they're both cell shaded i think (haven't seen any okami screenies in a while but naruto definatly was)

Well if that's what you want, what Ragnarok did was draw the characters in 2D, and used a technique called billboarding to draw them into the 3D world. They draw one image for each side of the characters, and then bind the texture to a square that constantly faces the camera. It's easy to do.

Well Zu Online is completely 3d and cel shaded. You could do a bit of research on it. That would be your best bet.

Nope I'm not talking of a ragnarok style game...

I mean like having a 3d scene thats looks like a drawn anime scene. Because 2D Pictures take too much work and are too undynamic(for changing the perspective of the picture or the rotation of things that are on that picture etc), 3D gives all this, but well it usually doesn't look like 2D, so I asked if theres a way to make it look like 2D

Hm about the possibility thing. I think a lot of things would be possible but maybe aren't made because the big companies stick with Idea's that have proven to be liked and Indie companies maybe don't have enough money/time/whatever to build it

Problem with Cel-Shading is that it mostly keeps the 3D Effect.

Judging from Screenshots, Okami looks pretty nice but somehow it still has too much of 3D... can't really explain :x
