I'm looking for an MMO which allows players to be politically active or at least has a high degree of roleplay in it. Prefferably a sophisticated roleplay community.

Uhh, politically? You mean like elect presidents, vice presidents, etc.? Well RF Online has a voting system where you vote for the leader of your race to lead you to victory in the chip wars. There is no RPing in this game unfortunately, if you want RP play Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Shadowbane has a lot of politics
I'm not really sure how it works because when I played I just followed the orders of my guild leader but in vent they would always talk about the politics of the game, seemed pretty interesting. I would not join shadowbane unless i had vent and a mic tho, thats the only reason I quit, my mic broke and I havnt been able to buy a new one. |

Goonzu is...crap.
If you're lookin for a game you can role play in and feel like stuff is going on you want Anarchy Online. The makers of the game are always releasing little "news headlines" about what's going on with one side or the other complete with full character stories and everything else. Plus it's even got whole chat channels just devoted to role playing. And they're supposed to be releasing an update soon that'll add little symbols to your characters name to let other people know when you're in "role playing mode" as opposed to just talkin about random stuff. Plus the gameplay is really good. |

A game I play, Blood Divide has an element of politics in it, in so far that the players within each nation get to elect a leader of their nation, who gets to spend their taxes on making the nation great and better than their neighbours and such like.
The game is small at the moment, in numbers, but growing, so I suspect so will the politics grow. I guess the rp bit is up to the individual though. Personally I love to rp within games.
