Samurai 7 was awesome for it's original universe and characters, inspired by that classic movie...
I got pretty bored of D Gray-Man, it seems like a clone of Beet (which was already pretty ordinary)
If you want a short but original anime, go for The Melancholy Of Suzumiya Haruhi or FLCL
And if you like mechas, go for either Evangelion or Bokurano (just started the latter, it's awesome)
