All that other crap needs power too. The 8800gt says 450w I believe minimum on the box. This doesn't mean that you can get away with 450w if you have tons of other crap. I had to upgrade my power supply when I got an 8800gt. All the drives and stuff I had wouldn't run on the 450w. Also, quality of the psu factors into the equation as well. A great 550w can run better than a cheap *** 650w.... Any way... you might as well get a 650w now as they are cheap, and will allow you to add in peripherals without upgrading the psu again should you choose to. Everyone always thinks the most important part of a PC is the chip/ram/vid card. Sadly, the most important part of your computer is the power supply. A cheap or underpowered one can cause many issues and downgrades in performance.

![]() i guess ill go with Arganius's build...calculated the total amount i would spend (including mail-in rebate, excluding a monitor), and it came out to be about $500. Which leaves me with $300 or so for a decent monitor. |

a barebone kit comes with mainboard case powersupply ram so all you need ot do i buy the cpu fan.. and the graphic card.. it's just to save time but w/e amd build is a lot cheaper than intel build, but if you want the best thing out there.. intel is the way to go.

Arganius has a good build, but if you have the money, I would recommend getting a 8800GT 512 MB graphics card instead of the 9600GT. 8800GT outperforms 9600GT and it just costs $10-$30 dollars more. This 8800GT is overclocked, has a zalman cooler, and comes with neverwinter nights for $10 more after rebate. Newegg - 8800GT |

One important thing, the E2160 might bottleneck the 8800/9600. You could overclock or upgrade to a better processor. I would recommend the E8400, if you are willing to spend the money on it. You could also get like a E6000 series processor.

hmm...if i replace the processor to E8400 and graphics card to the 8800GT that you linked there...the price goes up to about $630 (given you send all the mail-in rebates). How about the PSU? Is 530W good enough to give power to these 2 high-tier parts? Or...will I need to upgrade to a better one?

Also, someone suggested that you get an sli motherboard. Don't bother. For $1000 don't worry about sli...it doesn't give that big of a performance boost anyway. Also, don't listen to the person that said go with a CRT monitor if you game(fps games and such). CRT is DEAD. Definitely get an LCD. What you want to do is get one with a decent response time. I have a 20.1 inch widescreen LCD with a 5ms response time (LG l204wt). It does not have any ghosting or anything that would be detrimental to gaming. Counter-strike is just as playable on this than my older CRT. Just make sure to read some reviews and such of the LCD you are buying too see if it is a decent gaming monitor. The l204wt is a decent monitor for the price. By now they probably have a few models higher than this which are probably even better. |
