I'm thinking about getting into this series more, even after being disappointed by Portrait Of Ruin for the DS.
Which game do you guys think I should play first? Lament Of Innocence and Curse Of Darkness spark my interest the most, but I've heard good things about Symphony Of The Night and Dracula X Chronicles.

Oh, and I thought Portrait of Ruin was supposed to be good =/ (don't have DS, so I never tried).
Well, the 2 games you mentioned on PS2 are nothing like the original castlevania since they are 3D versus the old school 2D side scrolling castlevania. I have heard horrible things about Lament of Innocence, and Curse of Darkness didn't recieve perfect reviews either. Although I would really want to try Curse of Darkness if I have the chance to; screw LoI . One thing for sure though, try Symphony of the Night, and I believe most Castlevania fans/non-fans will tell you to try it too since it is believed to be the best Castlevania game ever made (at the perfect time too, during the peak period of PlayStation). You might not like it though if you were never exposed to it since it has been a while from the date the game was produced that you might find the graphics a little unbearable. But still SotN is just that great to have recieved so much compliment. If you really want to get a feel of the old school oringal whip and throw castlevania style, try Dracula X too with it. I think Aria of Sorrow was also really good imho, it feels and plays like SotN but with a different main character and other features. It's one of the very few GBA game that I actually enjoyed. (Fire Emblem was another, gotta love that GBA FE lol) |

I thought Portrait of Ruin was comparable to Symphony of the Night in terms of gameplay. Every Castlevania that has come out for the PS2 turns out to be complete shit, so I wouldn't recommend those. The GBA ones are rather old (Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow). I've never actually heard of Rondo of Blood, and I thought that I played every Castlevania ever released. So the only one I can recommend is Symphony of the Night.

I've actually heard good things about Lament and CoD. I've heard the levels are very linear and whatnot, but Lament has a surprisingly good storyline, and I've heard combat in both PS2 titles is really fun, especially during boss fights.

I've played all but rondo of blood.
Lament of Innocence was bad in my opinion. Get Curse of Darkness though, it's actually good. The ID system is solid and you actually level up so there's a point to killing monsters unlike in Lament of Innocence other than for money. Lament of innocence is more like the 3d version of the for the SNES and Curse of Darkness is more like the 3D version of SOTN. I still play Castlevania SOTN even after beating it lol. it is really good for a 2d rpg side scroller. I used hate some of the spell combinations though especially soul steal, but after a while you can do em easy. That game is a classic. the gba and ds castlevaina's are all for the most part good.
