Thats because even stray cats bury their shit, so they look for dirt. Its a natural instinct for them to use the litter box cuz there's litter in it. But the cat maybe too shy to use it if its too small, or in a too noisy room.

More or less how it works. We found our cat when she was a couple months old and in a matter of days after we bought her the litterbox she knew how to use it.

Now barfing is a whole different story. Whenever my cat needs to throw up she just does it wherever. One time I woke up with a huge pile of cat puke right next to my pillow
