I realize you want to tell the world you’re a non-comformist, but unfortunately being a non-conformist means you’re conforming to non-conformism. You might want to ponder that at that next record release party for a band no one’s heard of that you’re pretending to like.

But when that band nobody has heard of gets their songs played on the radio or MTV, what do they do when everyone starts listening to them? "Guise, I can't listen to this band anymore, they're mainstream now. Even though the music is still awesome, I won't listen to it just because everyone listens to them."

By telling people you listen to [insert highly unknown indie-group] x 10, you can impress others with your "completely original" taste in music, and comming off like a real expert on the topic. Or so some people think. Here in Norway it's a very common issue, especially in certain schools and professions. Basically, what the OP is refering to, which is pretty obvious, is how some people want real bad to be non-conformists, to stick out and be special and unique - yet they, like most people, seek together in social groups where people have things in common. Therefore you will have people who find those groups attractive and will conform to fit into the entire "non-conformist"-image. I don't remember who said it, and I think I might even have spotted it in a sig from someone here on onrpg, but there is a saying: "Funny thing about you non-conformists, is that you all look the same" |

You'd have to tell people to get creds, and then more people know. Quote:
He said if nobody knew about them, he didn't say "By telling people about bands that nobody knows.". Quote:
Seeking out a few people who share similar interests doesn't forfeit someone's right to being non-conformist, since they aren't doing it to fit in, they're doing it because they want to share their interests. There's a difference. If you sign up to a messageboard of a band that have say, a thousand fans, and you like them because you're not conforming to the mainstream, that doesn't mean you're no longer non-conformist. Non-conformism or conformism is about why you do it, not what you do. Quote:
I am a non-conformist in the sense that I like what I like, and dislike what I dislike, regardless of whether or not the mainstream likes it or not. I don't conform to like or dislike, just cos it's popular. If my views happen to be opposite to the majority, so be it, if they happen to coincide with them, so be it. I don't conform to anything for the wrong reasons. Conformism or non-conformism isn't about how many people you agree with or disagree with, it's about why you're doing it. |
