I honestly have started to doubt it. Could there really be a free old school style (lots of stats to build, stereotypical characters) rpg with (this is more lenient) simple graphics (not animations necessarily, just like little portraits of the enemies) and also stuff like shops, magic etc. If anyone has heard of anything remotely like this, could you PLEEASE tell me??

The best I can tell you is to either make one, search the net for a classic Sierra game, or rely on old SNES/ NES ROMs.

YES, runesword http://www.crosscutgames.com/index.html theres 1 and 2 2 is better of course, its like DnD based (old skewl) simple graphics nice nice nice battle system you build stats and the like....i used to play it on my old compy cuase i culd barely run that and doom Lol!
also theres an editing thing were you can make maps and such....what i did was made a map with an uber monster with like 1 hp and you get tons of xp so id get my chars up to lvl 200 something xD baldurs gate and icewind dale that whole series is really good and old school like that....you ahve to buy them though ><
