You know I am normally on the side of those who give up and join a group. But I am kinda thinking differently.
First I would suggest this change to just a simple arcade type scroller game.
Now since you have a neighbor who also wants to do this, get him very involved if he isn't (or perhaps he will never be of good use). Now after that, lay out your game as they say. Next I want you to tinker with that game engine, understand it, modify it and use it. Don't use the advanced things but start off basic, the reason I say this is because the fact that you actually found that engine shows more dedication then 90% of the people who post here, and I want you to start off and I think you might have a chance).

This is a failure in the making. Give up your Idea, and start something simple. KISS, Keep it simple Stupid. Google GameMaker, thats an excellent place to start.

Wouldn't advise a side scroller for a 1st game attempt... there's ALOT less free/illegaly ripped graphics available and it's unlikely that you'll be able to form a team big/experianced enough to make your own.

also start with single players to start with imo. 1st time MMO's never become populated enough to be worth playing but some single player games turn out amazingly.

at the end of the day it boils down to how much blood sweat and time you're willing to devote, nothings impossible, just improbable.
