Default What do I need to make an idea for an MMORPG?

Okay, well I want to start the project of making an MMORPG within the next few years. But I want to know, what do I need to have a solid idea, a concept I think its called. I was talking to one of my teachers, he said what I need for a concept is:

Monster Designs
Level Designs
Characters
NPCs
Skills
Damage & Spell Algorithms
EXP Levels
Bosses

Is there anything I should add to this list? Please help. Thank you.

Yeah ... town designs.
Overall ... area designs (unless all the monsters are in dungeons)
It would help to quick make the location of NPCs and such on paint first (A little map model)

And make say ... 10 weapons, armours, and items. You can add more after alpha is done.

Note that making an MMORPG is the hardest thing to do in the gaming world. If you can't draw like God or script C++, theres a very very small chance you will be able to make one.

If you break it down making an MMORPG is not really any harder than making a single player game, the only real diferance is networking.

I know. That is why I dont expect to finish it anytime soon. I have some experience in C++, Maya, Photoshop, and 3D Animation in 3Ds Max. I am currently learning more in C++, Maya, and Direct X. I expect to first learn everything on those and then start on the alpha. Read my thread in the introductions section. Then you will understand more about me and how I dont expect me to finish this right away. I am a pretty good drawer as well. But I am getting others who know how to program and etc. They can teach me while we work on it. But no worries, I'm not expecting this to be a 1 year project, I am expecting it to be a lot longer.

why would you learn animation in 3ds and all the other parts of 3d graphics in maya?

It's not really a bad thing it just seems a strange thing to do.

This was before I ever started wanting to make an idea for an MMORPG.
I just was interested in Animation and Maya, so I learned some.

Well, based on what your saying your going to need to learn one or the other. I studied maya in a class specifically for maya. Why your spending money on maya just for animation for a game, when you do not need the price tag of either maya or max for game development. 2 grand or 3 grand is not a good investment on your end.

Even if your using PLE or EDU licenses, they have limitations on what you are allowed to do with your creations in maya.

I have been learning animation, with maya for 4 years now, programming can take longer, much longer than animation, and I suggest you take one course, because learning the thin levels of both and with the price maya or max have, you should go with programs that export directly to direct x formats.

If you need any help in maya though I would be glad to assist.

On that note, I am a little interested in what you actually now about animation and graphics design in maya or max. Have any work samples?

No, i dont have any work samples, i actually stopped on this like 2 years ago, i dumped everything I did, all my work. Didnt really need it anymore since I didn't know I was going to continue. So I'm going to go on the course of programming. Which programs actually export to Direct X formats?

Maya is expensive how do you just drop it?

Anyways, most free programs export to a .x format for direct x. Milkshape exports to it, I believe game space does, but you'll find plug ins for them, most free programs will have plug ins, including blender which is free.
