Sometimes it will take a matter of seconds, or it could take hundreds of years on the fastest computer in the world. The more complex the password, the longer it takes. As for which one, can't suggest one. But good luck getting it open.

Holy..
I tried the Password Cracker 4.12 (evaluation version, sigh) which allows only up to 3 characters: there are more than 12000+ combinations and my jaws dropped. 12000 = around 8mins or so. Ouch, and I expect mine to be somewhere around 10.. but I just give it a try T_T I'ma go cry in a corner now.. thanks, everyone.. |

The reason is for how passwords are most often set-up. When you enter a password to be created(ie: making an account, password on rar, etc), the software takes what you type in, and makes an encryted hash of it. The encryted hash is basically a one-way translation. It turns your password into a series of what looks likes random letters and numbers, but its all keyed on, not only each letter, but what comes before and after each letter. That hash is then stored as your password. Then, when you log in, you enter your password and the software takes that and, again, turns your password into a hash. This time, instead of storing it, it simply checks the hash against the saved password hash. If they match, you get in. If not, try again, and again, and again, and again. etc These programs do the same thing, only faster. They take possible password options, turn them into a hash, and then match the hashes together. If they match, you got the password. If not, it tries again.
