Crocodiles can be found in Lathenda Bog, in Istan island. walk south starting from Blacktide Den outpost. They're fairly easy to get to.

Sometimes the monks (henchies or humans) have other more pressing matters to attend to such as healing party members being ganged up on, especially those in the front lines. Rangers are often low-priority for healing as they're usually in the back lines anyway. Put that way, yes, self-sufficiency (through self-heal) is crucial in GW too
Consider it your way of reducing pressure from your monk, helping him/her not deplete his energy in healing all of you.
